Every year has its quiet periods. When the Christmas trees are dragged into the house, during the summer holidays. We use such a period not only to catch our breath, but above all to get our affairs in order, take a course or read a good book, and work out the ideas we come up with.
Nineteen things you can do when things are quieter to help your business grow:
Learning
- Take an online course
I am a course addict. I admit it. Although a lot of information is available for free on the internet, I still regularly buy a new course to delve into a certain topic. Websites like CreativeLive, Udemy and SkillShare have countless courses at a reasonable price and sometimes even for free. Sure, CreativeLive is highly recommended, founded by photographer Chase Jarvis and completely focused on creative entrepreneurs. Over the past few years, I have traded Netflix for it. (Seriously, there apparently is a Netflix button on the remote control of the new TV, but I do not even know how that TV works; I never watch it!) My online interior photography course is of course also a great option ;).
- Read a book
Buy a good book on branding, marketing, or social media, or a book about our field. While reading, take notes of all the things you can implement in your business and schedule those tasks right away! You can of course start with my book Interior photography with natural light!
Collect reviews
- Create a form on your website
Create a form on your website that you can email to clients with a link to make it easy for them to write a review about your work. I built our website in Elementor . It has good options for forms built-in by default. Does your website not have that capability? Then install a plugin like Contact Form 7
- Look for reviews on the MLS
Every estate agent has on Funda or on Who is the Best Estate Agent reviews are listed. Look up the estate agents with whom you regularly work. Take screenshots as soon as you find a review that specifically mentions the work you have done.
You can, of course, put those reviews on your website and share them on social media.
Tackle the email chaos
- Clean up!
Clear out your inbox and unsubscribe from all newsletters you don't actually read anyway. Whenever I sign up for a newsletter, I always do so with a Proton account so that potential spam doesn't end up among my work emails. To make sure I am not distracted by every incoming email, I have been using for a few years Sanebox . The subscription for 2 email addresses is not really cheap, but it saves me so much time that I am more than happy to pay for it. It ensures that the email that actually appears in my inbox is something I have consciously dragged there, so emails from people I know. Everything else goes to the Later folder, unless they are newsletters. Sanebox detects those almost automatically and they also go into a separate folder. So an annoying red dot with the number of unread emails appears much less often in my toolbar, which, unfortunately, I can never ignore. Believe me, it has made me a lot more productive. And my inbox? At the end of the day, there are no emails left in there at all. What I haven't handled yet goes to the 'tomorrow' folder and will come in again then.
- Email templates
Create email templates for standard questions. Every time a potential client contacts us about a real estate presentation, we have a standard reply ready that explains our approach and lists all the prices. In addition, every client receives an order confirmation with a link to our tips to prepare for the shoot. Those tips are in the media files on the website.
Search your email for questions you receive regularly. Notion is ideal for storing standard emails (and deploying our plans, storing blog ideas and much more) and the great thing is: the free account is sufficient for everything we do.
Another option is Mailbutler , an email plugin that allows you to add templates and email senders to your messages at the touch of a button.
- Delete old emails
How many old business emails do you still have in your client's? At the end of the year, review them and delete anything older than 7 years. You do not need to keep them any longer for the tax authorities. To clean up your archive even more, you can archive entire mailboxes. Create a new mailbox for each year and set up a clear folder structure. Drag in all the emails you need to keep. Archive the mailbox and save it on your hard drive. If you ever need a specific email again, you just import that mailbox.
- Set up rules
We both use Sanebox but before that I had set up all kinds of rules in my email. For example, all my emails containing the word invoice or bill went straight to the Pay folder. Once I had made the payments and imported the invoice into our accounting software Moneybird , I move the relevant email to the invoices folder.
Regular clients had and still have their own folder, which is very handy for keeping an overview.
All the emails I used to receive from my children's schools were automatically sent to the Private folder. You can set up as many rules as you like.
Blogging
- Start blogging
I have already explained the why in this post . But how do you actually go about writing texts? The course How to create addictive content by Melissa Cassera on CreativeLive is very good. And while you are at it with writing, also update your bios on your social media and your about me page a go. Writing bios that get noticed, was a huge eye-opener for me!
- Content calendar
Create a content calendar for the blog posts you want to write in the coming year and stick to it. You really don't have to write a lengthy story every week. But writing regularly keeps you sharp; it increases your credibility and it's good for your visibility in search engines. I personally write down all ideas in Notion .
Website
- Update your website
Read all texts critical through and update them. Add new photos to your portfolio. Install Yoast SEO or Rank Math if you have a WordPress website. This allows you to optimise every page and post for search engines. The free versions are really fine. By the way, I use Textmetrics myself, which I also bought as a lifetime deal on Appsumo .
Gravatar, your photo online
Imagine you Gravatar for all the email addresses you use. With every comment you write on someone else's blog post, your photo will then appear. Use the same photo for this that you also use for your social media accounts. That ensures immediate recognition and it is done in a few seconds! Have you set it up? Then come back to this page for a moment and write a comment, then you can test it right away!
Workflow
Write out your workflow, from the moment you receive a project request up to and including completion. Mention every step that you or your client needs to take, so that you can use the same working method every time and make sure you don't miss any steps. You can use an app like Noteplan of Notion use to put all recurring tasks into. Create a template containing everything so you can use it over and over again. Noteplan can be fully integrated into the Apple ecosystem, so you will also see your calendar there. If you like to keep things simple, then Notion highly recommended. Noteplan is a paid app, but we have it in our Setapp -subscription ( Setapp is definitely recommended for anyone who has a Mac).
Social Media
Do you regularly post a photo on Instagram or do you want to start using Instagram more, but do you, just like me, find it such a hassle to keep typing everything out on your mobile? Luckily, nowadays you can just do that on the computer. I actually really recommend converting your account into a business account or creating a business account and getting a social media planner. The basic versions are often free. We have a paid Publer -account.
- Create a list of hashtags
To avoid having to come up with hashtags for Instagram every time, you can create a small file on your computer to collect all the standard hashtags you use. And write them down in your smartphone notes so you can copy and paste them if you want to share something while you are out and about. Do not use more than 5 keywords, and make sure your caption includes enough keywords.
- Cover photos
Make new cover photos for your social media channels like Facebook, YouTube and LinkedIn in the same atmosphere as your website, so your brand is recognisable everywhere. You can make them in Adobe Photoshop or you can use a free tool like Canva use this for. Don't feel like designing something yourself? Then dive deep into CreativeMarket. There you can buy all kinds of very affordable templates that you can customise in Photoshop of Canva .
Things for your daily practice
- Camera maintenance
Clean the outside of your camera body and lenses thoroughly and go to the shop to have your sensor cleaned. It saves time on every assignment if you don't have to brush away dust particles in Photoshop .
- Checklists
Create comprehensive checklists that your real estate agents can hand over to their clients. This way, the seller knows exactly what he or she can do to prepare for your arrival. That saves you a lot of time on-site. My book Turn your Home into a House, Ready to Sell gives you plenty of inspiration for all decluttering jobs, preparation for the photoshoot and the viewing,
Tidy up your computer
Create a clear folder structure and go through all your files. Move everything you no longer need to the external hard drive where you use the same folder structure. That way, you'll know where to put it next time. Or if you no longer need them: Throw them away. Also take a critical look at the installed software. Delete everything you never use. That desktop? Make sure it's empty! Believe me, it will make your computer a lot faster and your mind a lot more clutter-free.
So, did you find any tips you plan to work on in the coming period?
A number of tips on this page contain affiliate links. This means that we receive a small percentage of the purchase price if you order something via such a link, while you do not pay anything extra for it. We only recommend products and services that we fully stand behind and find worthwhile to share with you. We spend a lot of time on this blog to create content that is truly useful to you. Thanks to the income from affiliate links, we can continue to do so without charging you any costs. If you prefer not to, you can of course always look up the products yourself via a search engine.
