For years, I covered branding extensively. For each student, I analysed their website and other online expressions I found. In most cases, there was much to improve. Building a strong brand is not just about designing a logo and a website. It includes everything you put out into the world about your business. Good branding combines professionalism, your services, and your personality, and is aimed at your target audience: your ideal client.
You might be thinking: "Uhm, Nicolet, you focus on property presentation. You know a lot about interior photography. So how can you teach me anything about this?" Well, many people don't know this, but I don't just do the design and branding for my own logo, websites and books. I also do this for others. It's not my core business, but through word of mouth and my network, I regularly get assignments. At the moment, I'm developing branding packages you can buy here. I create them for you personally and tailor-made.
Before I start sketching a logo, my clients go through a detailed questionnaire. That is necessary to make the right choices during the design process. To build a strong brand, you have to start by analysing your target audience, formulating your vision and mission, and so on. There are several steps involved in developing strong branding. I'll explain them.
Your why
As a solo entrepreneur, you constantly have to work on building the name recognition of your business. By staying aware of your brand and using it effectively, you reach your audience, and your audience finds you. If they don't know you exist and don't know that you are the answer to their question, you won't get any clients.
Personality
There are countless home stagers and interior photographers who all offer similar services. One of the most important things that sets you apart from them, maybe even the most important, is your personality. So don't underestimate yourself in your branding. The connection you make with your potential client will ultimately determine whether they choose your business. Of course, price is a factor, but in the end, it comes down to a click and a sense of trust. People want to buy from people.
Your ideal client
Tone of voice
To reach your ideal client, you have to address them effectively. Many entrepreneurs tend to approach their clients formally. That's not surprising, because it was part of our upbringing and what we learned at school. But listen to yourself for a moment. When you visit a website, how do you want to be addressed? What resonates with you? Is it a distant, formal tone or a more human approach?
Website
Your online presence determines the first impression. As a home stager or real estate photographer, you know better than anyone how important that first impression is. Word of mouth is the best way to get clients, but the potential client who hears your name from a friend or colleague will still look you up online first to get to know your business. A professional look and feel of your website is therefore a must.
Social Media
Speak to your audience.
Of course, it matters what you like, but does it appeal to your audience? For example, is pink really the right colour when targeting male estate agents? In fact, you can't start building your brand until you know your vision and mission, and who your ideal client is. But even if you already have a logo and visual identity, having answers to those questions is important to your success.
If you outsource your branding to a graphic designer, hit the brakes if they do not ask about your vision, mission and ideal client, because if your designer doesn't have answers to those questions, they don't know what you need to project to build a successful business.
Define your style
Use templates
Spend time creating templates for your visual identity: blog posts, sidebar banners, and social media posts. Don't feel like creating them yourself? There are countless options available on websites like Creative Market.
Don't forget your offline presence either. Create branded checklists and forms to take to your client during an intake meeting.
Want to know more
